Anti-static liners: when you need one, and when you are buying insurance you already have
Static in a bulk container is a real problem for virgin resin, fine powders and electronics — and a non-problem for most other material. How to tell which situation you are in.

Anti-static liners matter when the material is a fine, dry, non-conductive solid that will be pneumatically conveyed or free-poured — virgin resin pellets and powder above all — or when the contents are electrostatic-sensitive electronics. For damp material, coarse material, conductive material or anything staying in a lump, a standard poly liner does the same containment job for less money.

Static comes up in almost every resin conversation and almost never comes up anywhere else, which is roughly the right distribution. Here is how to place your own material.
What is actually happening
Non-conductive granules moving against each other and against a plastic film generate a triboelectric charge. In a bulk container that shows up in three ways: material clinging to the liner instead of discharging, dust hanging in the air above the box, and — occasionally, in the wrong conditions — a spark.
Corrugated itself is mildly conductive when it has normal moisture content, which is one small reason a fiber box behaves better than a rigid plastic bin for some of this material.
The four cases where you genuinely need anti-static
- Virgin resin pellets and powder, particularly polyolefins, being poured or pneumatically conveyed out of the container.
- Fine dry powders in general — anything that behaves like dust when it falls.
- Electrostatic-sensitive electronic assemblies, where the concern is component damage rather than material handling.
- Any operation with a documented combustible dust assessment that calls for it. That is a compliance answer, not an engineering preference.
The cases where a standard liner is fine
- Regrind and post-industrial flake, which usually carries enough surface moisture and irregular geometry to behave.
- Anything with meaningful moisture content.
- Metals, glass, minerals and other conductive or damp material.
- Textiles, parts, components — anything that stays in a lump and is removed by hand.
- Material that gets scooped or tipped out rather than conveyed.
Amine versus permanent, and why it matters in Houston
Most economical anti-static film is amine-treated: an additive migrates to the film surface and attracts a thin moisture layer that bleeds charge away. It works well and it costs little. Two caveats matter locally.
- It depends on ambient humidity. In very dry conditions the effect weakens. This is rarely a problem on the Gulf Coast and is a real one in a heated northern warehouse in January.
- It has a shelf life. Film that has sat in a warehouse for two years is not the film that was tested. Rotate liner stock the way you rotate boxes.
Permanent anti-static and conductive films avoid both issues and cost considerably more. For most bulk resin work the amine film is the right economic answer; for anything with a hazardous-area classification, take the engineering advice rather than the price.
Gauge, which people get wrong more often than type

When in doubt go one gauge up. Film is cheap relative to a spill, and a torn liner in a bulk box means the box is now the container, which it was not designed to be for fine material.
The practical order of decisions
- Does the material flow? If yes, you probably want eight sides on the box too.
- Is it fine and dry? If yes, anti-static.
- How is it discharged? Bottom discharge means a spouted liner, which changes the box style as well.
- How sharp and how far? That sets the gauge.
- Only then price it. The cheap decision made in the wrong order is not cheap.
- ECT
- Edge Crush Test. Pounds per linear inch a board edge withstands before buckling. The best single predictor of stacking performance.
- Liner
- The flat facing sheets on either side of the fluted medium.
- OCC
- Old Corrugated Containers. The recovered-fiber commodity grade that used boxes become at end of life.
- Regrind
- Plastic scrap ground into flake for reprocessing. One of the highest-volume materials shipped in gaylord boxes on the Gulf Coast.
